What is a loft stilt?
A loft stilt is a rigid support post that fixes to your ceiling joists and raises loft boarding above the insulation. It creates a strong, elevated loft floor while leaving the insulation at its full depth underneath.
What's the difference between loft stilts and loft legs?
Both raise loft boarding above insulation, but loft stilts like LoftStilt are engineered as a heavy-duty structural system that supports a timber batten sub-frame, giving a far stronger and more rigid floor than lightweight plastic loft legs that support boards directly.
Why can't I just board over my insulation?
Compressing insulation destroys its performance — squashing 270mm down to joist height can halve its insulating value. It also traps moisture, leading to condensation, damp insulation and potential mould.
Performance & Safety
How much weight can a LoftStilt floor hold?
Installed as directed, the LoftStilt system supports typical domestic storage loads, with weight spread across multiple stilts and joists. The practical limit is usually your ceiling joists rather than the stilts. For heavy items or large installations, contact us for advice.
Will loft stilts damage my ceiling?
No — quite the opposite. By spreading loads properly across the joists and keeping weight off the plasterboard, a correctly installed LoftStilt floor protects your ceiling.
Do loft stilts prevent condensation?
The raised design leaves a ventilated air gap between the insulation and the boards, allowing moisture to escape rather than being trapped — significantly reducing condensation and damp risk compared with boarding directly over insulation.
Are loft stilts compliant with UK building regulations?
Boarding a loft for light storage doesn't normally require building regulations approval, but regulations expect insulation performance to be maintained. LoftStilt preserves your full 270mm+ insulation depth, which is the best-practice approach. For habitable conversions, always consult building control.
Installation
Can I install loft stilts myself?
Yes. LoftStilt is designed for DIY installation with a drill/driver, screws, timber battens and loft boards. Most storage platforms are completed in an afternoon. See our installation guide for full steps.
How many loft stilts do I need?
It depends on your platform size and batten spans. As a rule of thumb, stilts are placed at regular centres along each joist line, with battens spanning across them. Contact us with your loft dimensions and we'll help you calculate quantities.
What boards should I use on top?
Standard 18mm tongue-and-groove chipboard loft panels are ideal. They're available at any UK builders' merchant and screw directly to the timber battens.
Does LoftStilt work with blown or roll insulation?
Yes. The system works above mineral wool rolls, blown fibre and most common loft insulation types — the stilts touch only the joists, not the insulation.
