How to Install LoftStilt Loft Stilts

A typical loft storage platform takes just a few hours with basic DIY tools. Follow these six steps for a professional result.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. 1

    Plan your storage area

Decide the boarded area — usually a central platform around the loft hatch. Measure the area and count how many stilts, battens and boards you need. Space stilts at regular centres along each joist per the product guidance.

  2. 2

Check joists and clear the area

Locate the ceiling joists under the insulation and confirm they are sound. Carefully part the insulation only where each stilt will sit — never remove it.

  3. 3

    Fix LoftStilts to the joists

Position each LoftStilt base centrally on the joist and screw it down firmly. Work in straight rows so the stilt heads line up for the battens. Use a spirit level or string line to keep heads level.

  4. 4

    Fit the timber battens

Lay timber battens across the stilt heads, perpendicular to the joists, and screw them to the stilt brackets. This creates a level sub-frame floating above the insulation.

  5. 5

    Redistribute the insulation

Tuck the insulation back neatly around each stilt so there are no gaps or compressed patches. The insulation should sit at its full depth under the batten frame.

  6. 6

Lay and fix the loft boards

Screw loft boards to the battens, staggering joints between rows. Leave a small expansion gap at edges. Your raised loft floor is now complete and ready for storage.
